On Writing.
Feb. 13th, 2007 07:58 pmEver since I have started reading on my way to and from work on the bus and updating Vividimagination I have been craving a story to write. I know I could just pick up one of my old stories and write them but then I think I have changed since I thought most of them up and even then if I couldn't write them then why would it change much now. But lately I have been reading George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Fire and Ice" series and have really rethought my whole position on a lot of the aspect of writing.
I always used to think of things in the form of good and evil. Good vs evil more like it. The hero saves the day from a nasty maniacal villain. No matter how it's written it's still basically the same. But after reading Martin's work I finally realized that people are just people. They are not evil as much as they are not good. Things they do have consequences weather they do something intelligent or weather they do something stupid. I mean I have thought of these things but have I guess gotten the ideas more from earlier inspirations like RPG's and D&D where there is an evil and you must destroy it for the betterment of mankind. But things are never so Black and White.
I came up with a character recently that reflected some of this train of thought (except that he has godlike powers... old habits die hard). His name is "The Watcher". He has godlike powers but never uses them except basically to spy on people in their most dramatic times. If there is a war, he'll be there watching from somewhere. He never gets involved, in a manor of speaking. He will let himself be known, but he will not do anything to stop what is coming for good or ill he is just there to watch it unfold. I came up with this character as a thought of "What would I do if I were in this story and had the power to witness everything, would I do anything to help or would I just watch?" I don't think I would be as much of an ass as I see this person being but the reading has made me part of it like most books do and this one for the first time made me not a participant in the action but a viewer of it. Let me see if I can say that differently. Usually when I read a new book I feel compelled to be a part of the action, to be with or even one of the main characters and join them in their quest. In this instance though I don't feel the need to be with them but watch them, although sometimes I would love to tell the characters how stupid they are or even of impending events, and that's where "The Watcher" comes in.
Now the problem I have with this new character is that I can't really fit him into any of my current stories and then I don't have any ideas for new stories except for the fact that I want to use my world map in which to do the story on. but after that it's kind-of up in the air. I like that it's up in the air but still need something to start with and not sure what that will be exactly.
